I am an Environment and Sustainability major of fourth-year standing at UBC. I am currently employed part-time as a research assistant working in conservation, which has largely involved hands on field work collecting data on large mammal abundance in the backcountry. I aspire to continue to work in conservation, and focus on ways in which society can develop in a sustainable way, maximizing human progress while minimizing negative environmental impact.
Having worked as a vertical cave guide on Vancouver Island for the last couple summers, I have a particular interest in cave conservation and the ways in which we can protect a natural phenomenon of which there is exceptionally little public knowledge nor federal protection. In fact, currently no legislation exists in Canada to protect caves at all, as such there has been little research into the effects that logging and other resource extraction may have these fragile environments. I hope that in the future I may be involved with the furthering of our understanding of these certain environments, as well as the establishing of new regulations which may help to minimize the impact that human development may have on habitats and the valuable ecosystem services that caves, and many other natural resources may provide.
